Hi Singers!
As we start to wind down 2021, I’m sharing the exercise I used more than any other when warming students up in voice lessons . . . the #1 Voice Exercise of 2021 is Bi Bi Ba!!
This gets the breath going and then attaches the voice, switching up the activity from strong support to flexible velocity. It’s a real all-rounder, and fun to boot!
How to do the Bi Bi Ba:
- Do some panting and whinnying to activate a strong low belly breath and a fluttery diaphragmatic breath. Then, . . .
- Using the low belly, sing an arpeggio of staccati on Bi Bi Bi Bi
- Immediately move into a quick five note scale on Ba, now using that giggling diaphragmatic breath.
Be sure you’re “giggling” through the scale and if you’re having trouble moving the voice quickly, imagine you’re changing pitch behind the nose instead of in the throat.
If you’d like more help with this giggling feeling, try Panting and Whinnying.
And thanks for practicing!
